Notice to Maintenance Personnel

This notice addresses:

- After avionics tray removal for servicing, the attaching nuts show dark-colored flanges and/or the nuts slide down the rail, out of position.

Why does this happen?

Quickrax 6-32 nuts are installed by pressing down and rotating the nut clockwise to LOCK in to place.  The nuts are UNLOCKED for removal by pressing down and turning counter-clockwise.  When a tray is removed, the screwdriver force against the attaching 6-32 screws may inadvertently UNLOCK the nuts from the rail while removing the screws.

1. Use a 6-32 screw of sufficient length that can be easily gripped and turned by hand.

A 2" length socket cap screw, such as a McMaster Carr P/N 91251A159 is a good example.

2. Use a wire cutter/ diagonal-cutting plier to crimp the threads just past the first full thread revolution of the screw - enough to impede a QH632 nut from threading beyond the crimp point.

3. Use this tool in the same manner as the QT100 Hardware Starter.

Quickrax QT100 Field Substitute

If avionics technicians encounter this situation while performing maintenance and need to reset the QH632 nuts in the rail without a QT100 Hardware Starter, a simple substitute for the tool can be made from a 6-32 screw:
